Giorgio Grassi worked at the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, a government effort to stimulate economic growth and development in Southern Italy and then at the Ministero Agricoltura Foreste when the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno was desolved. During this time Giorgio collected and categorized figs from all over Italy. Some figs he numbered and eventually some were given names. Giorgio also wrote many papers and books including "Il Fico" REDA, 1991 which can still be purchased online.
C. Todd Kennedy, a San Francisco resident and agricultural attorney, collected figs in Italy in the 1980's and brought them back to California. Todd made many donations to National Clonal Germplasm including Italian 258. Todd is also associated with the California Rare Fruit Growers.
